World Cancer Day – United by Unique

I love how World Cancer Day is championing people-centred cancer care this year,(their definition is: People-centred cancer care represents an opportunity to refocus, rewire, and rewrite how we think about cancer, to embrace people’s differences, and to make sure that everyone is seen for who they really are and has access to the care they need).

This is not a new thing at all but it is incredibly important and encompasses so many aspects of cancer care.  To me, that approach makes perfect sense as it helps people address the issues that are important to them and gives them a voice. And from a purely practical point of view, focuses energy and resources where they are most effective, avoiding a revolving door situation,  encouraging independence and a positive mindset.

Of course, we know every person is unique and so too are their needs.

Coaching takes that into account and works with individuals in all their wonderful differences and celebrates them.  But coaching to support someone through a cancer experience, whatever that looks like, is still relatively unavailable.  We're incredibly lucky to have the support of Sussex Cancer Fund, who make it possible for us to offer this helping hand to people that need it locally.

If you had been through cancer treatment, wouldn’t you want someone to walk beside you on your own path, create a safe space where you can just be you – whether you're dealing with scanxiety, juggling new medications, coping with a lack of confidence or trying to figure out what 'normal' looks like now?  Cancer shaking up your world affects every aspect of your life and how you feel about yourself – that’s totally normal, by the way!

Coaching will help you tackle these challenges in your own way, at your own pace. But don’t take my word for it, here is what some of my clients said about what coaching did for them and why that is important.

·      “It's all about breaking things down into achievable pieces" – because sometimes those small steps lead to the biggest transformations.

·      “ Coaching was helpful in identifying an area of concern and how I could address it through practical actions” - because life happens differently for all of us and we have different priorities, identifying those and working on a plan to spend time and energy where you want is enlightening.

·      "Better decision-making skills, better self-esteem.  A sense of purpose A sense I may be able to move forward " – because feeling stuck is very bad for our wellbeing and having the confidence to make good decisions and progress is very good for it.

Together, we're showing that there's no one-size-fits-all in cancer care. Every story matters, every journey counts, and everyone deserves support that feels just right for them.

This World Cancer Day, we're proud to be part of a global movement that's making cancer care more personal, more human, and more... well, you! Because at the end of the day, it's about making sure nobody has to walk their cancer journey alone.
